Boomi and DevOps: New Capabilities and a Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

What areas has your organization invested in to drive its transformation efforts?

DevOps is now an established practice across organizations big and small, in various industries and geographic locations. In fact, as confirmed by a recent global survey from Vanson Bourne1, DevOps is still the leading approach for organizational transformation initiatives.

These statistics are not surprising. Software is eating the world; every company is a software company. Cliché or not, it's the reality. DevOps helps you speed your software delivery output, with proper quality and governance, to accelerate your initiatives, be they modernization, transformation, and/or innovation. And Boomi is committed to supporting those efforts.

We've rolled out some notable DevOps-related enhancements and capabilities — while also continuing to update and prioritize our backlog to best meet your ongoing needs.

In March 2020, we introduced Packaged Component Deployments, in essence decoupling the “snapshot” of a process and its deployment. This way the packaged component, which includes all elements of the processes — maps, profiles, subprocesses, connections, etc. — can be:

  • Easily deployed and traced across several environments — dev, test, production
  • Published to a library for reusability and utilization by other team members
  • Added to integration packs and shared with other accounts

Packaged component deployments also allows teams to work in parallel on the different process versions, knowing that the proper versioning will ensure the right visibility and governance, so no efforts will be undermined.

With the April 2020 release, we announced the availability of component metadata APIs. This further enhanced the visibility into component changes, and most importantly, allows the metadata to be exported and stored in a code repository for archiving and version differentials.

The new API series also allows you to plug Boomi artifacts into external deployment workflows and continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools.  For example, you can have the detailed XML configuration inspected by code quality tools for validation and compliance.

But arguably the most exciting news is that we are sharing our proven CI/CD framework, a reference implementation that gives you step by step instructions for connecting your Boomi integration processes and other components with external DevOps pipeline tools.

The framework allows you to have automated, repeatable deployments, and coordinate Boomi’s release with other deployments across your organization. It ultimately gives you the ability to enforce governance, ensure quality, and release with confidence to deliver software faster than ever before! DevOps at its best, right?
